Tuesday tidings Mathematicians,
Today we continue to evaluate ways to regroup fractions while adding and subtracting to allow for more mental math during computation.
As you evaluate an equation, if you hit a temporary roadblock, try substituting whole numbers to determine how addition and subtraction work in the problem.
For example....
if your problem is 11/4 - 1/3 + 2/8 - 2/3 - 6/8
imagine the problem with just the numerator as the whole number
11 - 1 + 2 - 2 - 6
then reorder them as you would using their original denominators (remember that means it would have the same size piece on an area model) to group them as you would
11 - (1 + 2) - (6 - 2) = 4
so 11/4 - (1/3 + 2/3) - (6/8 - 2/8) = 11/4 - 12/8 or 22/8 - 12/8 = 10/8 or 5/4
